Have any of the you come across the new lobby group called AquaFed:
the International Federation of Private Water Operators ?
No doubt
they will be promintly represented at the World Water Forum in
Mexico.
The AquaFed website explains that the organisation was established in
the end of October 2005 and is led by Gerard Payen, the former Senior
Executive Vice-President of Suez. Their goal: "to promote private
sector participation in water and wastewater management". One of
their two offices is on the very prestigeous rond point Schuman, in
the heart of the EU quarter in Brussels , straight opposite of the
European Commission headquarters. An expensive location, but ideal
for lobbying purposes. That also goes for the other office which is
in the centre of Paris (54 avenue Hoche). Coincidentally or not, the
same building is also the Paris address of
PA Consulting Group, a
multinational consultancy with a strong focus on the water sector.
"PA supports the water resource activities of international clients
through expert technical, economic and management services".
"AquaFed membership is open to all privately controlled companies
irrespective of their size or location", the AquaFed website states.
It claims to "bring together over 200 water service providers
operating in 38 countries worldwide", but a list of members is
missing from the otherwise very professional website. Could it be
that most members are in fact subsidiaries of Suez, Veolia and the 4-
5 other global water giants?
"AquaFed® will be the voice of the private water industry vis-à-vis
international organisations."
